Whats the seat belt law for side facing bench seats in a land rover?

I am thinking about buying a land rover safari as i have six children and seating is a problem but dont kno what the law states about side facing bench seats. Is it legal to drive on the road with side facing seats without seat belts or are seat belts not required for these seats ???????|||Click-it.. Or Ticket.|||OK, here we go again. If your vehicle is equipped with side-facing seats AND belts, you must use them; however, if you have side-facing seats, it's unlikely you have belts. Why? Because the belts are the most effective on forward-facing seats. Crash forces imposed on the human body restrained in a side-facing seat are entirely different than those on a body restrained in a forward-facing seat. In a frontal crash, the natural motion on a body restrained in a forward-fcing seat is to pivot at the hip, or the same as bending over to tie one's shoe; however, in the same crash, the force on a body restrained in a side-facing seat is to bend laterally-hardly a natural motion, and potentially dangerous-it can cause spinal injuries.|||If there is a seat that has a seat-belt fitted you must by law wear a seat-belt.

I did find this on the Land-rover discussion forums

Legal side is very simple you can have any belt you want or none at all for side facing seats. But if carrying children and you want to keep them safely restrained. you can only use an approved child restraint and none of them are approved for use in a side facing seat. So you have the choice of A not using any seat-belts or restraints, or B breaking the law and using the existing belts or upgrading to harnesses and using them. Still illegal to use em on a child. So you need to weigh up whether you go for unrestrained or illegally restrained. With adults it becomes their choice whether they use a lap-belt/harness or not.

I hope this helps|||I would have thought that side facing seats in modern land-rover's generally all do have seat belts so exactly the same law would apply to these as would apply to the front facing front and rear seats and if any of the seats didnt contain seat belts then it probably would be forbidded for anyone to use them but not sure otherwise|||If it came with seat belts from the factory you must use them.

If it did NOT come with seat belts from the factory then you are exempt.

Think of the seat belts as airbags, it did not come with airbags from the factory but you are not required to install them now.|||They are much too dangerous for kids why don't you get a people carrier ,they are safer and more comfortable ,also some side seated passengers suffer with motion sickness.|||Wear your seat belt, or get a $1,000,000 ticket, your choice.|||why would side facing be exempt?|||have it or get a ticket
