Knowledge GREATLY appreciated on the "reasonable cost" to get Brakes & rotors turned on a Range/Land Rover

My divorced w/ children girlfriend has some issues with her newer model Land Rover mostly with squeaky brakes with a bit of shimmy when stopping.. When she called the mechanic, he diagnosed it as an issue with brake replacement an/or/both the rotors as well.

He quoted her a cost of 1,000 to 1,200 to fix it. This seems like more than highway robbery, since new brakes and turning rotors together would cost around $200.00 for a standard car.

His claim is the Land Rovers is a very discriminative SUV. It requires factory parts or it will cause all types of other issues such as warning check engine lights going off and also providing poor road performance. Even if this is true, the price still seems really high. I strongly think that he is taking advantage of her because of her single status.

I would be very APPRECIATIVE to hear from anyone who has knowledge on Rover Repair costs. I will forward your advice on to her.

Thank you for your help!

kygirl3|||It depends on whats wrong, but your girlfriend's mechanic is right about range rovers needing factory parts. In fact, I would strongly advise against using aftermarket brake parts on any car (if the car is being used in a normal fashion, racing is another story...) English cars are especially picky, and parts are very expensive. Some luxury cars (I don't know about this rover, not knowing the exact model or year) have sensors that inform the driver when the brakes are worn out, it may not work with aftermarket parts (the owner's manual will say whether or not her car has this feature) Aftermarket brake pads are, in my experience, more likely to squeak, and can cause other problems too. As an example, when the Nissan titan came out, the rotors would warp in 4to 6 thousand miles with normal use. Nissan revised the design of the brake pads and altered nothing else and fixed the problem. The quality of the pads makes a huge difference. If the car needs new rotors and pads, or if it needs new calipers, the cost may in fact be reasonable. I would still advise her to go to another mechanic and get a second opinion, you never know how scrupulous someone is, and it can't hurt, right?|||i have done a lot of rovers, and the cost on doing front brakes on them usually runs around 400 bucks at the most,i don't know who she called ,but tell her not to let them repair it,that's way to much, there isn't any more work in doing that one than a Chevy,i don't know why mechanics charge this much,i been at this for 37 yrs,and you don't have to make all your money off of one customer, you make it a little at a time.anything over 400 is too much, good luck with it.

What is the tallest tire to fit a 1998 Land Rover Range Rover?

I have a dilemma. I've just purchased a 1998 Land Rover Range Rover. It currently has the stock tires and 16in rims.

I am wanting to take the rims and tires off of my Expedition and see if they fit the Rover.

The rims on the Expedition are 20x8.5 Boss 304's, the tires 275x55 R20's.

I've seen a Rover with a 265x45 tire and 20x8.5 rim, but I still have yet to find one with a larger tire.|||Sounds like you are trying to turn that RR into a Low Pro. Definitely not my cup of tea but if you log in to either landroverforums.com or lrrforums.com and ask there, I'm sure you'll get an accurate answer fast.|||you can put a new wheel with more radius but it will mess up your vehicles speedometer reading and actual speed, You might need to get it corrected i think.

1997 Land Rover Defender 90, service engine light on?

I am having a difficult time with this one this is a 97 Land Rover Defender 90 , I have a fault code P1317 that is the rough road signal did all the tests for continuity found all the wires from connector C636 to C501 to be intact etc.

The Service Reminder Unit is not behind the binicle, neither in the r/h front kick panel.

I also checked the wiring diagram and the wire that powers the service engine light comes from the engine control unit.

The service engine light remains on!!!

Any sugestions?|||Check that all the abs sensors have no debris on them, are seated properly and the sensor retainers are lubricated and tight. Wabco uses a special gray grease to ensure that there is no corrosion between the copper sensor bushing and the sensor.

You will have to check that all of the sensors display the same speed. If not replace the incorrect sensor. Incorrect readings can be cause by poor connections. Check resistance and voltage readings on a DVOM.|||you may have already, come across some of your problem. Your service light has an amber colored lens, which means, the problem in not to urgent yet. I beleive Rovers like most Cadalacks, have level ride systems, with air bag suspensions. They adjust the air bag pressure, for smooth rides.

You may heve a small air leak or some thing else related to your air ride suspension.

Why are used Land Rover Vehicles so cheap?

It seems like Land Rovers' don't hold their value worth a darn.....anyone know why? They are regarded as great, off-road capable warriors but according to KBB the a 1995 Discovery is only worth around $2,000. I know they have been owned by BMW, Ford, and now Tata Motors of India. Is it because they are expensive to fix/maintain? Thanks!|||None of these people know what they are talking about. I'll tell you precisely why they depreciate so fast. Very few people know just why cars have to depreciate.

Let us look at the Range Rover as an example. A new one costs around 76 grand. Now, it is fairly easy to get a well off person to pay 76 grand for a new luxury vehicle, especially a Range Rover. It sells.

The yuppie buys it. Here is where things go awry. He doesn't like it, because he is a yuppie, and he thought he was getting a normal wannabe SUV. So, he decides to sell it, and runs into a problem.

He cannot find a well off person who is interested in buying a used luxury vehicle unless it is one heck of a deal. After all, why pay 70 grand, when you can drop 6 more and get a new one?

For that matter, in this price range, why pay 65 grand?

As a matter of fact, that vehicle will have to fall much farther before the well heeled will consider owning it secondhand. So, it sells to the next buyer for 55 grand, who is also a well off person, but at least he got a killer deal. As such, he doesn't mind the fact that it is used. The seller didn't mind the loss because the vehicle qualified for a tax credit anyway.

So, yuppie number two drives it for a couple of years. He determines that he simply isn't manly enough for a Range Rover, and decides to sell it.

Now, in his ownership, he has reduced the value of the vehicle further, but just how much? It now has between 40 and 70,000 miles on the odometer, and is considered a proper used car.

No well heeled person would purchase such a vehicle, so it goes to an average yuppie this time. Average yuppies don't have near as much money as the previous owners, but they make up the market, so...

The price goes down, into the 30s or 20s, depending on how old the car is. It has to go this far for the people in the market to afford it.

So, this average yuppie buys the car, and he in turn drives it for a while.

After this while, the vehicle has more miles and is even older. He realizes that such a car really is too extravagant for him, and his wife's recent pregnancy mandates more monetary responsibility. So, he decides to sell the vehicle.

Now, this is a three owner car, and it is packing between 60 and 100,000 miles. It is older, but it is still in decent shape. The market has to drop again, but not to bottom just yet.

The only people interested in this car just got their first real job after college. The car has to drop to their price range to sell, so it lands between 10 and 20,000 dollars.

After a while, when THEY decide to sell it, it is too old for any yuppie to be interested in, or it has too many miles.

It has to fall down to the ENTHUSIASTS price. And that, my friends, is the price you are referring to. That is where WE pick it up, and drive it for 300,000 more miles before chopping the top and installing air lockers and rock sliders after we purchase another yuppie owned rig for driving on the street.

THAT is how depreciation works.|||They're British crap.

If you think they depreciate a lot, check out a Jaguar. When Ford foolishly bought Jaguar, they were just on the raggedy edge of being able to produce a car that could successfully be used for transportation. Just on the raggedy edge.

Both these companies improved somewhat while the huge engineering and financial resources of Ford were being wasted on them.|||They require a lot of repairs and the parts are very expensive. They are great cars in performance, however. You are better off in the long run with a jeep Cherokee.|||Because they suck, and they always break down, or there is always something wrong with them. And yes, they are very expensive to fix and maintain.|||They are the number one car that looses its price as soon as it drives off the lot.|||Keenith W great anwser

How will the 2008 Lexus LX570 and 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser compare with Mercedes GL and Land Rover Range Rover

The pricing for the 2008 Lexus LX570 is not out yet, but even the Toyota Land Cruiser starts at $63,885 (that's about $7,000 more than the Mercedes GL!). Even though those are steep prices, the LX570 and Land Cruiser does however have enormous amounts of luxury features and new technologies like crawl control and blindspot cameras and an enormous 5.7 V8 with 380 horsepower while still retaining the Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle II rating, oh, and ten airbags, power third and second row seats... Note: the Crawl control is like auto-pilot for off roading, scaling mountains, boulders, etc...|||I agree, lexus and toyota quality are unsurpassed. The gentleman that notes that mercedes and land rover have better quality should look at the customer satisfaction ratings for these companies, both bottom of the barrel. Normally, Lexus' are my favorite, but there's something about Land Cruisers that make me like them better. They're definitely better than the GL and G. Toyota or Lexus is your best bet. They hold their value well and last forever.|||The Mercedes and land rover have a better build quality with higher end materials and more luxurious feeling interior that last longer. The Lexus and Toyota use allot of cheep plastics inside but as far as gadgets go they are probably on par (the range will be better off road). so if you want gadgets and leather the Lexus and cruiser will be goods but if you want great build quality and true luxury i would look at Audi Q7, range rover, X5 or the GL.|||The Lincoln Navigator beats all of them and then some! If you like them then you love them.....but you are quite correct...not the most reliable vehicle in the world.

We have a 1971 series 3 and to be honest it's a motoring nightmare.

No power steering, no syncromesh on the first two gears and overdrive instead of a high gear that you have double clutch to select.

As for the wandering steering...we won't even go there.

But we love it...so I would say YES...buy a Landy!

As for parts in the US...you'll have no problem at all getting them.

How Would I Convert A Diesel Consuming Land Rover Into A Vegetable Oil/Bio Diesel Consuming One?

My friend has asked me to help him convert his old land rover into one that runs on vegetable oil instead of diesel. I don't know what make it is exactly, but it is a series two or a series three with a normally aspirated, 2.5 litre engine. I would also like to know what this conversion would to to the performance and wether it has any downsides to it. Thanks!|||There is a difference between biodiesel and vegetable oil.

Biodiesel is produced from vegetable oil, but is very similar in all characteristics to real Diesel. You don't need any mods, but you will need to find a source, or make your own.

Running straight vegetable oil in a Diesel is possible, but the problem is that veggie oil is more viscous than Diesel. It also tends to gel at low temperature. What you need to do is install a separate tank for your veggie oil. The tank needs a heater, plumbed into your cars cooling system. You won't be able to use this tank until it gets to around 140F, so you need to install an electrically operated valve which allows you to switch between your regular Diesel tank and your vegetable oil tank at the flick of a switch. You will then use regular Diesel for starting and warm up. And when you stop the car, you will need to throw the switch back to Diesel, and allow the veggie oil to purge out. Be aware that vegetable oil will foul injectors, so you will need to clean them periodically.

I've included a few helpful links.|||From what I have read you can run bio diesel in a diesel engine with no mods. Do you have a source for Bio? If not there are distilery set ups to make your own a few hundred gallons at a time.

How big can i go on my land rover tires?

i have a 2000 land rover discovery 2 and i was wondering how big can i go on tires and wheels if it is still stock.|||this depends on wether or not your willing to go shaving bits off your fenders. As far as I know on the stock ones the stock wheels are about as big as i'd go. Any bigger and you may get some rubbing problems. Lift it though and trim the fenders and you could get much bigger tires.

Land Rover Discovery II Passenger Side Mirror Problems?

I have a 2004 Land Rover Discovery II that I recently purchased. The passenger side mirror is loose. I does not move when I am driving but when someone walks by it can shift it from the position. Land Rover Freelander 2004. Are they more expensive to maintain and repair?

I'm thinking of purchasing a Land Rover 2004 Freelander. My husband says they're more expensive to maintain and repair than other "american made" small suvs. Does anyone have experience with this type of vehicle that can offer some insight? Thanks!!|||Hell yes they are more expensive, and a huge pain in the ***.

For example, I have one customer in my shop that owns one. She knows to call ahead 3 days in advance for an oil change so we can special order the $20 oil filter for it that has to come from out-of-state. Who needs that kind of complication and added expense for the most routine maintenance. Good thing the vehicle is new enough she has not needed any other work. Outside of the very sparse dealer network there is no parts availability for these vehicles.

A Ford Escape offers more room and practicality at a fraction of the price. Even the smallish Honda CRV would be a better choice. Land Rover's, like most Euro makes I am convinced are for people who have a need to feel superior. Practical transportation devices they are not.|||The most expensive thing about the Land Rover and any other SUV is the gasoline to keep them running and the carbon footprint you add to your already huge footprint by operating such a vehicle. I use it for family trips to the mountains, hauling my son's drums and boating stuff. Enthusiasts love them, but those not familiar with the vehicle and brand are not so likely to love them. What will you use it for? C7S: You are still wrong even now. They don't get the worst mpg, and they aren't the most unreliable. Power all you want, and point at Consumer Reports until your finger turns blue, but when it comes down to it...

When people who actually get out of doors need something rock solid to endure extended operational durations in the worst conditions available, they STILL choose Land Rover, and they are very happy with them. Land Rovers are finicky because people don't read the manual. One thing people never stop to consider is the fact that they are DRIVING it to the dealership to complain about it.

I am just going to put it out there that I search for Rover related questions to help owners understand their vehicles. I do this every day. And every day, C7S pops in to say they are the worst cars in the world, the absolute automotive spawn of the underworld.

The Toyota is MUCH over priced which suprises me. Anyway, I dont see a reason to own an suv this large for any reason what so ever. But if i was buying one Id buy the Toyota because it can go off road. Buying and suv and never taking it off road is stupid. However since your throwing Range Rover in the mix, then Thats what I would buy. But its to over priced, so I would get the LR3. So basicly...

I would buy the Land Crusier for that back up camera, thats cool. I wouldn't buy the Mercedes cause its not as good offroad, and I wouldn't buy the Lexus because its the same as the Land Crusier, which is over priced meaning the Lexus would be SUPPER EXTRA overpriced. So I wouldnt buy any of these large Suvs cause they're just to big. But all in all, I would choose the Land Crusier or the Range Rover. More than likely the Range Rover. Yes its over priced but it can go offroad AND it's more luxury and worth the price. As to off road capability, the Range Rover would be much more capable than the Land Cruiser/Lexus. The ones off road in other areas are not what you buy here in the US, just like the Range Rover that more than 1/3 of the world apparently see as their first vehicle is not the same one you can buy here in the US. I would much prefer the Land Rover vehicles over the Toyota vehicles.

But it is all just personal preference. I would tend to disagree with the statement about more of the Land Cruisers off road than the Range Rovers. In many of the circumstances of both makes they will never see anything off road.

Either way you are getting a very nice vehicle, it is a matter of how much you want to spend and what you like.|||well a think that Range Rover is the best choice since your looking for both luxury and power. Its got every feature that a land cruiser has and a few other features that you won't find on any other car.

Because a Lexus and a MB GL are made for city driving but they don't do very well in mountains and aren't really good for camping and etc. and you should forget about them if you aren't the kind of person who just wants to drive in the city.

A land cruiser is an awesome car for deserts but range range rover is made for all kinds of terrains!

The Best SUV in the world(my opinion) is Range rover because it power full,it's luxurious,it,s fast enough for a SUV,it does great in all kinds of terrains and its classy!

Was it any different than when Land Rover was owned by Ford. Thanks!|||I've had warranty works done on my Land Rovers since BMW, Ford or Tata owned them. There shouldn't be any difference at all.

How will you think it will compare with the Mercedes GL/G, Land Rover Range Rover, or any other large luxury SUV's.

Note: the Crawl control is like auto-pilot for off roading, scaling mountains, boulders, etc...|||Why are you even asking? You obviously are biased toward the Toyota and Lexus anyway. You bash every answer you get in both of your questions.

EDIT: No you provide evidence to support your OPINION. This is a question that doesn't have a correct answer it is all based on opinion and when someone else gives their opinion you provide yours in a way that bashes their answer. If you already had your mind made up that the Lexus and Toyota were the best why ask the question?|||Toyota cannot compare with the look, ride and specs of the finest off-road vehicle ever built.

How can Land Rover and Jaguar be posting losses?

Apparently Land Rover and Jaguar are showing a6 billion pounds loss this year. How can this be, there are thousands of new Land Rovers on the road and the new Jag looks nice and should sell well?|||econmics 101 spending more then you are making.

yes they are good products - I see a lot of them in show rooms no one can afford, or are unwilling to pay for. Plus the overhead of corporations, advertisments, shipping, handling, and production. margins need to exceed costs.|||I can appreciate that Jaguar are making huge losses because of its poor product range but questions must be asked about Land Rover whose product range is very popular and extremely expensive.|||They aren't

Its the parent company Ford who are making the 拢6 billion losses, mainly because the U.S. car market is in the same situation the U.K. car market was in the 70's.

The price of fuel (the price of petrol has risen from under a dollar a gallon to 3 dollars a gallon in the past few years) has turned U.S. consumers away from gas guzzlers, and better quality, smaller and cheaper imported cars are flying out of the dealerships. Ford and GM just can't compete, and are having to sell of the crown jewels (Jaguar and Land Rover) to fund reconstruction of the Business.|||There are some sensible answers already.

One additional point is that it's possible to move losses between companies in a group.

Take the X type (no one else has...) - it uses the Mondeo floor pan. How much do you cross charge? The price of the materials? The price of the labour + materials, or do you try and give Jaguar some Ford losses by making a case to charge the for the development as well.

There are loads of common components throughout the ranges and this sort of thing will go on. It'll be designed to ensure the group of companies pay as little tax as possible.|||Because we live in a self hate nation who buys foreign rubish insted of our own! Look at our police force running around in Volvos when the equivilant Jag is far supirior and those crap Merc 4x4s that couldnt touch a Land Rover off road! sad but we only have ourselvs to blame!|||They sell a lot of cars but the vehicles they sell are also expensive to build.the cost of designing a new vehicle is around 250million each, with the concerns of global warming these bigger vehicles also cost more in tax to build|||They are just 'Posh' Fords. Until a 'decent' firm take them over, they will continue to trade at a loss.|||ford owns them both and ford is losing badly in every thing|||The X type has not been a sales successes as jaguar thought the rest of the range is becoming dated now L/R is trading successfully but seem about to loose a large contract to the British Army.

Which car is better Jeep wrangler or Land Rover?

I am getting my permit in 2 months and I am getting a new car. I prefer a car that is big and strong. But cant decide whether I should get the Jeep Wrangler or Land Rovers. Which car is nicer?|||The land rover is so popular but its very expensive. the jeep is cheap and easy to make it look cooler.|||land rovers are nicer...but they are more luxerious...but jeeps on the other hand...are relatively cheap to customize and make awesome....and jeeps pwn landrover when it comes down to 4x4|||the land rover is nicer its a jeep thing i do understand that's why i have a toyota don't limit yourself to jeep look at toyota suvs also|||for what?

neither are particularly reliable. if you are off roading the wrangler is MUCH better unless you can find an old defender, which may be the best off roader ever.

the land rover is nicer, but more expensive. it's also less reliable. if i were looking for a very capable off roader with good on road manners and creature comforts, i'd look at the nissan xterra. the new ones are almost as good off road as a jeep, but much better on road and are available with a 6 speed. (or were) they'll tow more and haul more too.

truck and motor trend rated the xterra the #1 off roading SUV all arounder in a shoot out in their july (i think) issue (it might be august or september) beating out the hummer, the land cruiser, a land rover and a jeep.|||Jeep Wrangler.

Land Rover - What are pitfalls with pre-owned and which model ?

I am looking to buy an LPG converted Land Rover and want to spend approx 拢3000 - I would like good economy too , .

What should I know about them , running costs , common faults etc|||Used to deal with a specialist about non-technical business matters. Told me they do have various weaknesses. The transmission, front hubs/steering, chassis rot etc, agricultural to drive and high running costs. Objectively the Toyota is light years ahead in all practical respects. But he added people buy the Landrover because it is a Landrover and they are enthusiasts. But if you must buy other than from a well respected specialist offering a guatantee, get some expert imput. Enjoy your motoring!|||Pitfalls...

Land Rover repair in Playa del Carmen or Cancun?

I recently moved to Playa del Carmen. I am looking for a Land Rover dealership or repair shop that is close to Playa or Cancun. I think the closest dealership is in Merida, but looking for something closer. The car is doesn't need any specific repairs now, but like to be prepared. Any ideas?|||this won't help you...but good luck. my boyfriend has a land rover in mexico and the repairs are sooooo expensive, there are not many mechanics who can work on them, and the dealerships are limited.

his one piece of advice...don't take it to a regular mechanic. FIND the dealership....and allow plenty of time for the repair.

Who owned Land Rover during the times of bad reliability?

I am an avid Range Rover fan and was trying to figure out a little more info on them. I know they are not known for their reliability and I am just trying to figure out under which ownership did they have the worst reliability.

I know they have been from BMW to Ford/Jaguar to know Tata motors.

Thanks in advance!!!|||i don't know.

About how much will it cost to get a valve job on a Land rover?

It is a 1996 Land rover discovery

Please help

just an estimate

PS it has 101k miles on it|||scrap the car, has far as i'm concerned any valve job on any car is always mostly expensive, on top of that you have a land rover which the parts for are WAY over priced. If the car is in really good condition you might wanna consider a new engine you might have less surprises then with a valve job. Hope this helps.|||do you mean just adjust the valves? or did you bend or break one? adjusting the valves is not too bad, but if you bent them it will be expensive.

Information on a Land Rover Series 2a winch?

i recently purchased a 1964 landie in wales. It has an original fitted land rover manufactuered hydraulic winch. How stupid do you think it is that Tata is purchasing Jaguar and Land/Range Rover?

The $100 billion company (Tata) is only buying Jaguar and Land/Range Rover for a collective price of $3.2 billion from Ford. I remember when BMW owned Land/Range Rover, and Jaguar was a spectacular company all its own.|||Tata is not so specialized in manufacturing high end cars but JLR has the specialized team so tata only needs to monitor everything and fill their pockets|||Yes, you are pretty. you didnt get the question.

|||Well since Ford and BMW have both given up on them then why not an Indian company owning them. Payback for all the years the British kept the Indians under their thumbs eh? What goes around comes around.|||It is plain business sense. Both Jaguar and Land Rover are good cars, with a good R%26amp;D team, good designs, good and experienced workforce, excellent dealer and service network, good presence (market visibility), good brand value, good and loyal customer base and poor management.

The management part, Tatas will provide. ;-)

Simple!!!|||This is just stupid. Why would anyone even try to buy those 2 companies? Those two companies in my opinion produce the crappiest cars ever. Land Rover: Produces unreliable cars that look very clumsy. Jaguar: produces the most unsensible cars ever.|||Emotionally speaking it is a good deal for the tatas but how to make the venture a success we will have to wait and see.

Good news for Indians is Tata will learn from the 2 brands and use the technology in their cheaper cars

Should I buy this Land Rover made before Land Rover was owned by Ford?

I'm talkin about the makes made in the 90's guys. I don't intend to buy the new ones made when Land Rover was bought by Ford. I'm intending to buy the Land Rover SUV's when BMW had control.

I think it would be a decent buy to get the 90's Land Rovers.

What do you think?|||It is so fun to own and it is so much trouble to keep running. Only do it if you are good at doing repairs..|||high cost of repairs compared to a jeep and if your going to use it for what it is made for id go with jeep|||I mean, personally, I feel Land Rovers are the most unreliable vehicles on the planet, but with that being said..

BMW owned Land Rover for only a few years. The newly designed Range Rover was when BMW made Land Rovers legitimate again. Then they sold it cause it was competing too much with the X5. The Ford bought it.. then they sold it to an auto company in India..

If I were you I'd look in a different direction for SUVs. My uncle had a 97 Range Rover with only 80k miles and sold it in 4 months it was that horrible.

IDK about the Land Rovers itself (all I'm talking about is the Range Rover) But I'd have to imagine its not all that better. Just keep in mind your going to have to put as much money into the car as how much you bought it for..|||Uh, no.

To be honest, I am pretty sure Ford was as good for LR as they were for Volvo and Jag-u-ar.

Not that getting a Land Rover shows any sort of intelligence anyway, but Ford actually did some good for the Euro companies it bought up.

Which has a better reputation Land Rover or BMW?

I know both are considered luxury brands, but which has a better reputation Land Rover or BMW?|||I have the X5 and the LR Discovery. The BMW is far more reliable, handles better be it snow, rain or highway and better on gas. The Land Rover is good off road and snow and has never let me down however I take it to the dealership for repairs. The Land Rover is more comfortable though with better visibility. I like my LR more|||BMW|||BMW-legend|||BMW -- I owned one. Members of my family liked mine so much, my uncle bought one exactly like mine, as did one of my cousins. Of the three, they were all the same year and model. they all went 250,000 + miles without any major problems.

I currently own a Land Rover, and while I love it, it has been a bit quirky. It is a good vehicle, mechanically, but they are notorious for electrical "issues". It has never stranded me, but has forced me to stay in second gear before.

If you go with Land rover, buy either a new one (factory warranty) or a certified used one (dealership warranty) and if available, get an extended warranty. It has saved my butt more than once from some high $$ repairs.|||BMW.

LandRover is chosen every year by J.D. Power %26amp; Associates as the Worst car in reliability and quality.

British car brands like LandRover, Jaguar, RollsRoyce, Bently, and Aston Martin are all junk. They are all known for breaking down and high maintenance/repair costs.

BMW and Porsche are the most reliable German brands. They are 100 times better and have a better reputation than LandRover.|||BMW

but Land Rovers are soooo much cooler

How much ground clearance did a stock Land Rover Defender 90 have?

I am looking for the ground clearance measurement (in inches) for a stock Land Rover Defender 90. Preferably for the 1994 D90 Automatic. but chances are is that the truck has a factory installed amplifier for the speakers and when you changed the radio the new one isn't sending power (remote wire) to the old amp so it isn't pushing the speakers

you will need to send power to the old amp, or rewire (run new wires) all of your speakers to the back of your new radio|||my only guess is to check your wiring

If Mercedes-Benz have some of the worst reliability around, why chew out Land Rover so much more harsh?

Lol by now I think people have figured out I'm fond of Land Rover. The only thing that I do not understand is that Mercedes-Benz have some of the worst reliability ever, but people still love them. Some Mercedes-Benz are over-priced and have horrible resale value.

When people talk about Land Rover, it has all the flaws of the Mercedes ,but seems that no matter what it gets no love.

Can someone explain this?|||I don't know of any Mercedes that has a bad resale value, even the C Class outperforms Japanese cars as far as value retention is concerned. They are also more reliable than Land Rovers. No I'm actually a Jaguar fan and have no problems with their 4X4 cousins and am actually quite fond of Defenders. Land Rover's reliability problems have a lot to do with poor service as well as build quality. High priced and scare spare parts add to the phenomena of owners not properly caring for their vehicles, adding to their reputation for being unreliable. |||whoa slow down mercedes-benz is know for there world class performance and smooth riding.there in there own class.|||You are starting to become obsessed pal. Mercedes has been known worldwide for their quality. Example, the 240D is bulletproof, and is used in livery service worldwide, some with close or more than 500,000 miles without a rebuild. Land Rover, on the other hand, does not fare as well.

Should I buy a 2006 Lr3 Land Rover or a 2007 Toyota Fj Cruiser? And why?

I love the Land Rover. And love the FJ a little less.|||The Land Rover is an absolute pile of junk. I love the styling -- I really do -- but they are a reliability nightmare. The lightning fast depreciation of the LR3 is a testament to that fact. The book value on the 06 LR3 is about $19000 -- That's a vehicle that sold new for around $45000! That's 60% depreciation, and it will continue to drop at an alarming rate (I took in an 05 Freelander in mint condition for $7500). The FJ will depreciate by about 40% in the same time period and level off.

If you don't plan on owning it long, and you don't mind taking the hit, go for the Land Rover. If you want a vehicle that'll go the long haul and hold value, go FJ.|||it all depend ..land rover its land rover and toyota its toyota.. check out the specification of the 2suv.. and make a list of the adventures things u make or u want to do.. and them compare it to the trucks... and see the prices cuz the fj its lower than the land rover...|||Land Rover is much nicer in my opinion|||I think the package that Land Rover puts together is tempting,

however reliability scores are low. Several trips to the dealership

with problems, tend to make you forget why you liked it to begin with.

The Fj Cruiser is better on reliability, but it only has 2 doors. I

would consider the 4runner limited a better choice and more

in line with the Lr3.

Extended Warranty for a 98 Land Rover Discovery with 120 K miles?

I have a 98 land Rover Discovery with 120K, I am interested in purchasing an extended warranty on it, do you have any suggestions as to where I would be able to purchase a warranty for this vehicle--I want a place is legit and has good sound standings.|||You can check out the extended warranty offered at the Land Rover dealerships. They are independent but oftentimes they do have offices inside a Rover dealership. Your car needs to be inspected though so if I were you I will purchase a warranty right during the scheduled maintenance and have it multiinspected that way you don't get charged again for another inspection at the time you purchase warranty.

If i cut the second muffler of my land rover exhaust.?

if i cut the second muffler of my land rover exhaust would it cause any damage to engine while i was driving? My thought is that i will just sound louder and there will still be enough backpressure from the other muffler to keepthe suv running good.|||I am assuming that the muffler you are talking about is down stream from a main muffler and catalytic converter. What you are talking about probably is a resonator. Resonators are put into exhaust systems to suppress a certain narrow band of noise frequencies. So, removing the resonator will make the exhaust louder but it may also make it raspy as opposed to the muscular boom you wish. If you take it off, I would not destroy it, just in case you need to reinstall the resonator.

Your engine will not be damaged by removing this muffler.

I told my friend that people only like him for his Land Rover Range Rover and he got mad. Why did he get mad?

My friend is a professional, and sees lots of people for his job. I told him the reason why a lot of people smile and are so nice to him is for his land rover and invite him places. So everyone keeps telling me to not get a Land Rover LR2 because of the reliablity, is it true?

Does anyone out there have a 2008 Land rover LR2 and had numerous problems with it?|||No do not get any Land Rover because they are full of gremlins, what i mean by that is that the vehicles have alot of electrical issues , warning lights coming on all of the time and maintenance warnings will come on frequently. This brand will stay in the shop more than on the road and will drain your wallet. I have to admit the LR has the best look in its class but it is a mechanical / electrical nightmare, take my advice run away from it and get something else like an Acura MDX .|||Yes.

LandRover is the least reliable car according to J.D. Power %26amp; Associates.

And Consumer Reports Magazine.

They are the worst built cars.

What's more classy and prestigious: Land Rover or Lexus?

I'm talkin Lexus SUV's. The Lexus LX is a beast of a car, and the GX and RX are cool. Land Rovers are da bomb with the LR3 and Range Rover Sport. Whatcha think?|||Just my two cents, but Lexus is like a grown up Honda to me...which is probably why there are so many of them on the road...they appeal to everone in a generic sort of way.

Land Rovers dare to be different and when you drive the Range Rover Sport or LR3 you are going to get noticed. The Sport looks like its moving fast even when its parked and the LR3 can beat up just about every car off road.

Lexus may have street cred with the people who want to purchase style, but those who have it already choose Land Rovers.|||The asker wanted to commented that Lexus is from the Toyota Motor Corporation.

|||SUV's arnt classy|||Depends what you want it for. The Lexus is great for driving on road and posing where as the landrovers will do the business off road as well. The range is a little heavy for serious mud plugging and you'd be better going for a LWB 110 or UHT. But if you want to look cool then the range is better.|||I like them both but the new LX570 and gx470 is gorgeous. The gx470 drives like a sports car. The lexus are very reliable. Both of these can off-road almost as well as a Range Rover. The Range Rover is still the Off-road king. Whats the seat belt law for side facing bench seats in a land rover?

I am thinking about buying a land rover safari as i have six children and seating is a problem but dont kno what the law states about side facing bench seats. Is it legal to drive on the road with side facing seats without seat belts or are seat belts not required for these seats ???????|||Click-it.. Or Ticket.|||OK, here we go again. If your vehicle is equipped with side-facing seats AND belts, you must use them; however, if you have side-facing seats, it's unlikely you have belts. Why? Because the belts are the most effective on forward-facing seats. Crash forces imposed on the human body restrained in a side-facing seat are entirely different than those on a body restrained in a forward-facing seat. In a frontal crash, the natural motion on a body restrained in a forward-fcing seat is to pivot at the hip, or the same as bending over to tie one's shoe; however, in the same crash, the force on a body restrained in a side-facing seat is to bend laterally-hardly a natural motion, and potentially dangerous-it can cause spinal injuries.|||If there is a seat that has a seat-belt fitted you must by law wear a seat-belt.

I did find this on the Land-rover discussion forums

Legal side is very simple you can have any belt you want or none at all for side facing seats. But if carrying children and you want to keep them safely restrained. you can only use an approved child restraint and none of them are approved for use in a side facing seat. So you have the choice of A not using any seat-belts or restraints, or B breaking the law and using the existing belts or upgrading to harnesses and using them. Still illegal to use em on a child. So you need to weigh up whether you go for unrestrained or illegally restrained. With adults it becomes their choice whether they use a lap-belt/harness or not.

I hope this helps|||I would have thought that side facing seats in modern land-rover's generally all do have seat belts so exactly the same law would apply to these as would apply to the front facing front and rear seats and if any of the seats didnt contain seat belts then it probably would be forbidded for anyone to use them but not sure otherwise|||If it came with seat belts from the factory you must use them.

Can someone explain this?

|||One luxury that Mercedes has is a huge marketing budget...tell people enough about other topics and the reliability issues can be pushed aside. Land Rover is much more of a niche brand that only tries to speak to a very specific customer for each of its vehicles.

It should be noted however that Range Rover Sport recently finished at the top of a resale value indicator for its category...something to think about.|||Both are extremely unreliable

I don't have much love for either|||i'm always curious - those posting answers; how many actually own any of these vehicles? reading a magazine doesn't really compare to owning.

I purchased two MB in 2006

C350 sport

CLK55 AMG Cabriolet

The cars, as far as engine, transmission --- the things actually built by mercedes are great. I have had NO mechanical problems with either car and the C350 sport now has almost 55,000 miles. The contracted out parts however, completely suck.

I've had the nav system in the CLK replaced 3 times, the entire Harmon-Kardon sound system had to be replaced once. The sony erickson bluetooth phone system installed by the dealer at sale in the C350 never worked well and i've replaced it with a parot system that is far superior. The CLK had several software issues that it had to go back to the dealer to be repaired.

All the work aside from the bluetooth phone was covered under warranty, and seems like all the bugs were in the first 6 - 12 months of ownership.

The year i bought them, an office mate gave me a hard time as mercedes had dropped to something like #46 in consumer reports and Kia or Hundai was in the top 3. I drove whatever car it was that was in the top 3 when my benz was in the shop as a loaner car and it had half the miles of the benz that was being repaired, but felt like it was being held together with bailing wire and duct tape.

I find people who rip on mercedes or rover as being "not at the top of consumer reports" being more often than not a case of sour grapes. if they could afford a benz or rover, they'd drive one too. I've driven both, and believe me - same price or four times more expensive, i will take a benz over a kia or hundae all day every day. |||You are right. But why choose either?

The problem in the mind of most people, including myself, is that both Mercedes and Land Rover are very expensive brands. For the premium price, most people would expect to get something extra for the money. But instead, they get less -- less reliability and quality. I would happily pay for pay for premium quality -- actually I do, with my Lexus -- but you don't get it with Mercedes and Land Rover. In fact, I'm not sure what you do get except for the admiration of other uninformed car owners.

Things to check before buying a Land Rover LR3?

Before buying a Land Rover LR3 what are some of the technical things I need to check to make sure it's running properly?

I'm buying a used one.|||Not to mark your decision. But Land Rovers/Range Rovers are not good vehicles. The builds are poor even by british standards. If you really want it, have the mechanic check the compression ratio, timing, transmission condition (complete), and most of the drivetrain components (especially the axles, drive shaft, and wheel bearings). Just bought a land rover free lander and its drinking water and oil and petrol?

just bought land rover free lander it looks like its had the head gasket changed it runs fine no burning oil it just drinks water and oil and petrol can you help the heater is fine expansion tank always runs dry with oil in it which is slightly creamy....|||If there is oil in the coolant, I suspect that after they replaced the head gasket they did not flush the coolant system fully.

I am a little concerned about the fact that the car is using water and oil. I suspect that the head gasket may have failed again. My advice would be to get your money back.

Ja.|||What did you expect it to run on - coca cola ?|||I suspect the gasket wasn't done properly and probably the head is warped/cracked. It will drink petrol, but certainly shouldn't be using oil or water noticeably. You've got two choices, either hand it back and retrieve your money if you can or invest in a good going over by a decent mechanic.|||if you can, take the vehicle back and ask for reimbursement. this was the biggest landrover mistake they ever made. that is why they stop making this model. it has nothing but problem. back to your problem, it indicate the headgasket or cylinder head is leaking. anytime the engine use oil and coolant, it is leaking internal so you cannot see the leak. a well train mechanic have the tool to confirm it..|||Lets say.......bought a lemon, bring the tequila and lets do a shot!!! :)

Wish I could offer help but can't, just a little sympathy for the money you'll spend. :(|||sounds like old residue if the gasket HAD gone but could be more serious, cracked head or block, try packet powdered slder ce-lit in expansion bottle works wonders. If this is your first get used to petrol disappearing|||Unfortunately, this issue is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Land Rovers are terrible products. They sell based on prestige and styling alone, but their reputation is awful. That's why used Land Rovers are so affordable.|||I assume it's the 1.8L K series rover engine and not the 2.5 V6? It sounds like either:

1. The replacement head gasket was badly installed, or has failed again.

2. The head warped when the old gasket went and needs skimming.

3. There is a crack in the block.

What I would do (I don't know how mechanically minded you are, so if not take it to a trusted garage!), is take the head off, and take it to an engineering company to see if it is flat or needs skimming. If it's badly warped you will be able to see yourself, just by putting a straight edge across the underside of the head. If it needs it, get it skimmed (拢150 ish). Rebuild fitting a new head gasket. Flush out the cooling system thoroughly, and do a complete oil flush and change including a new filter. If you do this yourself, it will cost less than 拢200 including the oil and filter, or maybe 拢450 ish at a garage. If this doesn't fix it, then you have a cracked block, and you are probably into replacement engine terratory. Even that shouldn't be too bad, as there are a lot of these engines around second hand. Land Rover engines are usually pretty bullet proof, but unfortunately this on was from a rover saloon car, and this problem is common in all of the numerous vehicles to which this engine was fitted (e.g. Rover, Freelander, Lotus Elise, MG's, Caterhams etc).

Good luck, and don't panic! If you do end up replacing the engine, how about fitting a 2L diesel??|||K-series 1.8lt ? oh no they are a nightmare!

The 'muck' you can see when you look in the expansion tank is oil mixing with water, either as above a left over from the previous head gasket, or hopefully not a new leak.

The water levels need to be checked every week to be sure it doesn't happen ( they made the tanks too small for the job) so the water consumption is 'normal' for a freelander.

As for the fuel consumption they do drink a lot, I had a 4 litre Range Rover, and converted oit to LPG because of this. I am now back to a diesel discovery.

Good luck,

;o)|||its a land rover, it will do that i suppose, just be happy water is free and as for the oil again a land rover is huge so it is probably supposed to do that.
