Thinking of buying a land rover discovery (1999 and earlier) any tips for my hunt?

I go to school in the Southwest and it seems the ones in my price range ($5500) are located in LA so I'll have to ship it to my location (about $900). This will be my first SUV. It will be kept in a desert location, but is there anything I should know in advance in terms of maintenance, recalls, suggestions? Is there a cheaper alternative to the Land Rover ?|||I used to have a 1990 Range Rover, and though I loved its agility, it was a financial nightmare. If you need parts (Which you probably will, as there are alot of electronics that can and do breakdown) they are very hard to find and are usually not carried nor available through your local parts store. And if I called Landrover they referred me to www.roversnorth.com. Also they are very bad on fuel mileage, and in the Southwest where you say you are, I know gas prices in Las Vegas are around 3.29 for mid grade which you would need. If you are looking for a cheap but adgile offroader direct from the factory, a $5500 Landrover is a good choice, but there are alot of alternatives. I prefer Dodge...|||Back in 1999, I was looking to buy a SUV and I had narrow it down to three. Discovery was one of them and the other 2 were MB's ML320 and GMC Yukon. I did some research and asked around, Discovery was the first to crossed off the list due to it's high cost of maintainence and low hp ( I needed to tow with it too), the ML had it's own issues as well. So long story short, I went with a Yukon SLT 4x4. Same price range and low cost on parts, didn't have any issues with it over the 3 yrs that I owned it.
